「メサイア」のテキストと聖書
ヘンデル Georg Friedrich Haendel (1685-1759) が作曲したオラトリオ「メサイア」の台本執筆者であるジェネンズ Charles Jennens (1700-73) が、そのテキストをもっぱら聖書から採用しており、とりわけ、新約聖書の福音書からよりも、旧約聖書から適切な文節を採ったことは、良く知られている。全体は、「預言と降誕」、「受難と贖罪」、「永遠の生命」の三部から構成される。また、第3部は、『イギリス祈祷書讃美歌集』に大きく依拠している、と言われている。
テキストのそれぞれの個所が、聖書のどのような文脈の中から選ばれているか、については、ご自分で直接聖書を紐解いて確かめていただく他無いが、参考までに、テキストに対応する『欽定訳聖書』(King James Version)、現在の『英語版聖書』(Good News Bible Today's English Version ed.2)、日本語訳聖書(『聖書 新共同訳』)のそれぞれの個所を以下に整理した。
